Video record the prettiest girl in the world doing something active and heartfelt like – oh, I dunno – singing to throngs of fans, and you’re likely to find at least one or two awful still pictures of her during that film sequence.
Take one of the best singers of our generation (who normally has an epic voice, but who is under immense pressure after being maligned for lip syncing at the inauguration for whatever reason) pouring her heart, soul, voice, and body into a superbowl performance, and… well…
The thing is, a lot of photographers have been using this unfortunate picture as their excuse to tell clients, “This why we don’t send you all your pictures from the shoot!”
The problem with that is that you’re comparing apples and oranges. A singer is not a model while they are performing on a stage. They are remembering their sharp dance moves, passionately singing, interacting occasionally with the fans, and in Beyonce’s case… just trying to be impeccable. After a “bad press” deal, she was probably more worried about being on point than having a bad shot taken of her.
But when you’re jiggling and gyrating around as your dance routine and making sassy faces to accompany a line like, “If you really liked me, you shoulda bought me the Yurman ring I asked for instead of this cheap dimestore trinket,” or the one that could have been the sequel to that: “Get your shit outta my house, which you can find to the left of the closet. The hideous ring I didn’t want is in there too,” how can you not make a few foul faces to convey your message?
It’s just a bad moment caught on film worth a giggle and nothing more.
We all know what she looks like, and it’s not going to change anyone’s mind about how pretty she is, how heartfelt her singing sounds, or the quality of her talent. Although it will be flooded with meme lines before long, for now, the only thing that comes to mind when I see this picture is, “Screw your obsession with whether I had to lip sync once and suck on the flawless performance I just delivered.”
Contrarily, with the exception of maybe Megan Fox, not many models could get away with intentionally making a face or posing like that. If you are a model purposely doing that for the camera, you might want to seek a new line of work because you’ve broken about all the rules (and potentially, the camera lens too).
Anyway, I may not be her biggest fan, but I do like Beyonce’s voice. Performance has nothing to do with posing. If you get a good still, awesome. If not, congratulations to the paparazzi scum who “got the shot”; you’ve made internet infamy. And I’m only helping you.
That’s all. Cue to end-scene with a joke about both the Niners and Knowles complaining about not getting “rings”.
xoxo
